Gastrozol® Oral Paste

• Effective treatment of Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS)
• Enteric-coated for optimal absorption
• Once-a-day dosing
• Pleasant flavoured paste formulation
• Easy to administer

1. Effective inhibition of gastric acid production
Omeprazole regulates gastric acid secretion at the parietal cell membrane within the gastric mucosa. This inhibits release of H+/K+ATPase, the enzyme which catalyses the exchange of hydrogen ions, also referred to as the proton pump. The decreased production of hydrogen ions causes the intragastric pH to rise above 4, which prevents further erosion of the gastric mucosa and allows ulcers to heal spontaneously.

2. Effective treatment of EGUS
The powerful antisecretory effect of Gastrozol Daily causes a dramatic reduction in the acidity of the stomach fluid within two days of commencing treatment. Because the gastric fluid is no longer irritating to the stomach lining, ulcers then heal spontaneously within two weeks. Continuation with reduced daily dosing then prevents ulcers from recurring.

3. Enteric-coated omperazole
Gastrozol Daily contains enteric-coated omeprazole granules to ensure the highest bioavailability. Omeprazole is readily destroyed by gastric acid, so enteric-coating is required to protect the drug and ensure delivery of a therapeutic dose to the duodenum. If omeprazole is not enteric-coated, a much higher dose rate is required and the delivery of the drug to the bloodstream is less reliable.

4. Convenient daily dosing
Horses only require dosage of Gastrozol Daily once per day for the treatment and prevention of EGUS. This aids in owner and patient compliance with treatment protocols.

5. Paste formulation
Pleasant tasting vanilla flavoured paste is easy to use for veterinarians and horse owners or trainers, which ensures accurate dosage and maximum uptake.

Give orally via syringe. Set the adjustable dosing syringe to the required volume and deposit the paste to the back of the tongue. It is important to administer the paste as far back over the tongue as possible to eliminate chewing and destruction of the enteric-coated granules.
Immediately raise the horse’s head to ensure that the full dose is swallowed. If any of the dose is lost, it is advisable to repeat the dosage.

2mL/100kg bodyweight (1.0mg/kg bodyweight) once daily as directed by a veterinarian.

Treatment: 10mL/500kg bodyweight (1.1mg/kg bodyweight) once daily while horses remain in training.
Maintenance: 5mL/500kg bodyweight once daily while horses remain in training, or as directed by a veterinarian.

Gastrozol Daily 10mL/500kg bodyweight (1.0mg/kg bodyweight) can provide rapid healing of stomach ulcers while horses remain in training, which may be associated with the improvement in clinical signs within two weeks of commencing treatment.

When left untreated, ulcers can recur in two weeks with a severity and across an area equivalent to that prior to treatment. Available data indicates that regular daily maintenance dosing at a reduced rate prevents the recurrence of ulcers.*
