Cefaguard™ is an antibiotic injection containing ceftiofur. It’s used to treat footrot and metritis in cattle, and respiratory infections in cattle and pigs.

  • Nil milk withholding period.
  • Ready to use.
  • Plastic vials, meaning no more broken glass in dairy sheds.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

  • Cattle (for Bovine Respiratory Disease and footrot): 2 ml/100 kg body weight, daily for 3 days. Repeat on days 4 and 5 if required.
  • Cattle (for acute post-calving metritis): 4.4 ml/100 kg bodyweight, daily for 5 days.
  • Pigs: 3 ml/50 kg bodyweight, daily for 3 days.
  • Cattle may be injected either intramuscularly or subcutaneously in the upper neck. Pigs must be injected intramuscularly only, in the upper neck. Doses greater than 10 ml should be divided between several injection sites.

WITHHOLDING PERIODS

It is an offence for users of this product to cause residues exceeding the relevant MRL in the Food Notice: Maximum Residue Levels for Agricultural Compounds.

  • Milk: Nil
  • Meat (cattle and pigs): 2 days

PACK SIZES

Available in boxes of 4 x 30 ml plastic vials.

 

This product is classified as red under Antibiotic Judicious Use Guidelines for the New Zealand Veterinary Profession. Red light antimicrobials are considered important in treating refractory conditions in human and veterinary medicine, and are only be used following veterinary diagnosis on a case by case basis with sufficient evidence to indicate need.
