Spring into Summer: Why Vaccinating Your Pets is a Must!

8 November 2024

As the flowers bloom and the sun starts shining, pet owners are gearing up for exciting spring and summer adventures! Before you embark on hikes or book that boarding kennel or cattery, let’s discuss an important topic: cat & dog vaccinations.

Vaccination is crucial for all cats and dogs, especially for puppies and kittens who are still developing their immune systems. Vaccinations can prevent a range of serious diseases and reduce the severity of others. In New Zealand, around 50% of dogs are reported to be under-vaccinated, increasing their risk of preventable diseases.

The Importance of Dog Vaccination

With warmer weather, pets will be socializing more than ever—from trips to the park to playdates with furry friends. Parvovirus is unfortunately still very common in dogs here in Aotearoa and frequently seen in vet clinics.  The disease can progress quickly, and severe disease often results in death. Ensuring dogs are vaccinated not only protects them but also helps keep other dogs safe in the community.

If you plan to use boarding kennels, keep in mind that many facilities require proof of vaccinations to ensure a healthy environment for all pets. The kennel cough vaccine is particularly important for dogs, as this highly contagious respiratory infection can spread rapidly in group settings. Studies show that about 80% of dogs exposed to kennel cough will contract it if they are unvaccinated. The same can be said for feline cat flu which is frequently contracted in catteries.

Puppy & Kitten Vaccination

For puppies and kittens, the vaccination schedule typically begins early in life. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association recommends starting vaccinations at 6-8 weeks of age, with follow-up doses to ensure full protection. Regular vet visits will also allow you to discuss any additional preventative measures, such as parasite control, which is essential as fleas and ticks become more active during warmer months.

As you prepare for all the sunny outings, don’t forget to check in with your vet about the overall health of your pets. They can provide tailored advice based on your pets’ specific needs, ensuring they’re fit for summer adventures.

Here’s to a healthy, happy, and adventure-filled season for you and your beloved pets!
