Suprelorin® 4.7mg is a temporary contraceptive implant for male dogs, male cats, and prepubertal female dogs less than 16 weeks old. It offers all the benefits of surgical neutering without the need for surgery.

THE BENEFITS OF SUPRELORIN®

The decision to neuter a pet isn't always easy for owners, and many are concerned about the risk of surgery. Suprelorin® 4.7mg can help with a variety of issues, including:

  • Unwanted sexual behaviour
  • Roaming
  • Unwanted litters
  • Urine marking and odour in cats

Because the implant is temporary, it gives pet owners time to consider the decision to neuter and also provides the option to breed in the future.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The Suprelorin® 4.7mg implant contains deslorelin, a GnRH agonist, in a slow-release, biocompatible, and degradable implant. The implant is placed under the skin and works by providing a continuous, sustained release of the GnRH agonist. This suppresses the hormones that control the reproductive organs, like testosterone in males and oestradiol and progesterone in females, effectively causing temporary infertility.

EFFICACY AND DURATION

The duration of action for the Suprelorin® 4.7mg implant varies by species:

  • Mature male dogs: Infertility lasts for at least 6 months.
  • Male cats: Infertility lasts for at least 12 months.
  • Prepubertal female dogs: Oestrus will be suppressed for at least 6 months and on average 12 months.

In rare instances, an animal may regain fertility sooner than expected. If signs of fertility return, such as an increase in testicular size or the return of sexual behaviours, it's possible for the animal to mate successfully. If you have concerns about an early return to fertility, a veterinary examination is recommended.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

Placing the implant is very simple and is placed subcutaneously (under the skin) in between the shoulder blades. Only one Suprelorin® 4.7mg implant is needed, regardless of the size of the dog receiving the implant.

It will take more than a month for the implant to be effective the first time it is used, and so it is necessary to keep the treated dog away from on-heat bitches for 4-6 weeks after the implant is placed. The implant lasts for at least six months; therefore, to avoid any lapse in efficacy, it is recommended to place a new implant every 6 months or consult your vet if signs of fertility return earlier.
